On the plantations in the Peruvian desert, the seeds of the jojoba nuts are harvested by hand, cleaned, selected and finally gently processed into the precious jojoba oil. The workers on the plantations receive fair wages. In addition, there are educational and health services.
WATER IN THE DESERT
Simmondsia chinensis or jojoba is a unique useful plant. It is robust and has a deep root system. Jojoba shrubs grow in poor soil, need little water and, due to the climate, do not require chemical pesticides. Since jojoba shrubs are native to the desert, they are only suitable for cultivation in dry climates. But that is by no means all. As German scientists from the University of Hohenheim have discovered, jojoba plantations bring water into the desert. This is because large plantations can influence the microclimate in such a way that more precipitation falls.
